The wonders of science and technology have changed our planet today into an ecumenical village. The fastest means of communication and transportation, telephones, television, jets, spacecraft made us all residents and neighbors in this village. Many times we are more easily informed about something that happened at the other part of our planet, rather than something that happened in the area we live in.
As the inhabitants of a village have common problems, so the peoples of the earth have their own common problems and as the former cooperate to solve them, so the latter must work together to solve their own problems, much more when the problems which they are facing are more important than the problems of a traditional village. Such problems are the ensuring of world peace, the avoidance of nuclear destruction, the fight against hunger and global violence, the protection of human rights on the earth and other minor issues. We can no longer say that these problems are not about us, it is necessary for the peoples to cooperate with each other, whether they are cultivating and selling their products, or eliminating wars. A lot of people believe that the big obstacle to cultivating the love of the peoples and the approach of cooperation and prosperity of all them is the national education, as it was practiced in the past and as it is practiced in our schools. They claim that the cultivation of love for the homeland and the nation is at the expense of the spirit of the general cooperation of the peoples. Also some difficult problems that need to be overcome are the differences that exist in the national and linguistic tradition in the customs of every people and the persistence of each one in its particular characteristics. It is obvious that we are facing the dilemma: patriotism or cosmopolitanism (the denial of the homeland and the national ideals, the theory that every country is the homeland of man and therefore all the people on our planet are fellow citizens).
How can peoples cooperate better together? First of all, true patriotism and good favored cosmopolitanism are not opposing concepts so that one excludes the other, but they are complementary concepts. As it must precede love for the homeland, love for the family, and for humanity, must precede the love of the homeland. Otherwise, we build without foundation. The child at school must necessarily engage in his or her consciousness the true and specific form of the homeland with all its content. The formation of national consciousness and the love of one’s own homeland is the first step for the love of the home of others. So, both parents and, above all, the school must direct their work towards repression, for other religions, for other tribes. It is necessary through the lessons of the school to serve the idea of global cooperation in all possible ways. It is necessary the spirit of international solidarity to be strengthen by raising the profile of the problems of other peoples, like the racist regime of South Africa. There is a need for students to circulate international magazines appropriate for their age and to enhance correspondence between students from different countries and different continents. It is advisable to exchange pupils from schools of different states for a short period of time, to organize a celebration to honor a remarkable foreigner and teaching in the class of foreign scholars who are enlightened in the texts of literature. All this must be done in such a way that the child perceives the man of the other state as his neighbor with the same problems and the same craving for a human life on our planet.
In addition, people around the world have to act and take up the affairs of their ecumenical village themselves. We need another kind of democracy, a participatory democracy that will make the citizen involved and co-responsible in the affairs that concern him in his everyday life. Practically this can be done through open dialogue on critical issues. The argument that the peoples are not science and technology specialists is not strong because people will decide either by smaller organizations and associations rather than technology if we want to ensure, for example, peace with more nuclear weapons or destruction are a matter of peoples not only of technologists or politicians.
With such measures and means, there is hope in the future that the peoples of the earth become more cooperative and able to cope with the problems that, in the course of time, will become more internationalized. Churchill’s speech is more relevant nowadays than it was in the Second World War: “or we work together to achieve something together, or we work each other out and lose.”
